StudioEast (Arthur Smith Studios) Is Closing

Hello all-

I wanted to pass along the sad news that Arthur Smith Studios, more recently StudioEast, is closing after 55 years in business. The studio portion will go elsewhere, while the building is now owned by a law firm. While the building itself will thankfully still exist, it is sad to see the end of a place where so many famous people worked and recorded. This includes several songs featured in There Was A Time, including "Abba" by the Paragons, "Catch A Ride" by the Grifs, "Go Way Girl" by the Damascans, the Young Ages, and many, many more.

May the music and the people that created there live forever.

Postponing The Decades Of Rock Show Due To The Incoming Hurricane, Updates Coming Soon

So here's a story about the hurricane. Randy Franklin and the Sardines, and Jake Berger and the Mannish Boys are prepared to rock you like a hurricane on Saturday, but it's best to not Rock during a hurricane. I know, there's calm in your eyes, but you'll keep being blown away, so it's better to be somewhere safer where the feeling stays. So yes, we're postponing our inaugural Decades Of Rock show until a later date. Until then, we'll all be riding the storm out, waiting for the fallout. Spread the word, see you on the Weather Channel, and see you on the road.

Decades Of Rock Show, Charlotte, NC, September 15, 2018

On September 15, I'll be bringing back my series of shows playing the music that many of us grew up with. This new series, entitled Decades Of Rock, features some of your favorite local musicians playing the music that rocked the world, and rocked our world during those times. The Mannish Boys open the show with the garage rock and R&B of the 1960s, and then Randy Franklin & The Sardines bring the 1970s, some of the 80s back to life. The show is at Neighborhood Theatre, doors are at 7pm, and the show is at 8pm. And tickets are $10, online and at the door. Spread the word, see you there, and see you on the road.

Two Articles About The Young Ones, From Lumberton, NC

Hello all-

These articles turned up some time ago, but I'm finally getting the chance to post them. Enclosed are two articles about the Young Ones, from Lumbeton, NC, and their winning the Big WAYS Battle Of The Bands in Charlotte, in November of 1966. The article from the Observer is a bit condescending (I smell a folkie, jazzer or geezer turning up their nose at the youngster's music), but the Robesonian article is a really nice find. My thanks to Maria David of the RetroCLT blog for helping me find these articles. Enjoy,

The Mannish Boys Are Rescheduling This Friday's Show At Smokey Joe's

Hello all-

The Mannish Boys have had to bow out of Friday's show at Smokey Joe's, due to an attack of the stomach flu. Temperance League is stepping in, and will bring the Rock. Sidewalk Bob still opens at 10pm, and Temperance will provide anything but at 11:15pm. Five bucks provides you with all of the merriment and wonder for the evening. I'll also be on hand for any of your questions about the book, or anything else. Look for a list of upcoming Mannish Boys shows in the next post. See you there, stay healthy, and rock on,

Jake Berger And The Mannish Boys Are Back in 2018!

Some of you have been asking when I will be getting back to booking shows like the 60s Rock & Roll Reunions. After the successful Double Door Inn anniversary show, I’ve decided to give them another round. Charlotte’s own Mannish Boys will lead the local charge back to the garage, with shows at Smokey Joe’s on February 16th, April 27th and July 6th. Book co-author Jake Berger, Rob Thorne, Greg James and JC Matlak will bring all of your fave garage rock, psych and R&B. And Charlotte’s own Sidewalk Bob and Mitchell Kearney will be opening the Feb. 16th show. Show begins at 10pm, and tickets are five dollars.

But wait, there’s more! The Mannish Boys will be playing the Evening Muse on Sunday, March 18th for a special live recording event. Showtime is 7pm for this show. Get there early, get loud and make some noise, and you’ll hear yourself (and the band) on record, some (hopefully soon) groovy day. And yes, a certain photographer/show promoter/tambourine player will also be lurking about. Come by, say hello, and ask me if I’ve made any more progress on my next books.

More on these, and more shows coming soon. Spread the word, and see you at the Rock Show.

News About The Bondsmen, Stars Of Our Book

Hi everybody. How are you? I wanted to share some photos from the recent Bondsmen reunion show, and some news. It was a great show, again, and I discovered that the band wrote and recorded a single (both an A and B side) in 1969 that was never released, despite one of the songs getting airplay. And from what the band played at the show, they sound fantastic. Hopefully, you'll get to this and more soon, as the band is currently working on their first ever album. More news soon, and I hope to see you all again in the coming year.
